breakthebarrier AMD Athlon[754,939,940]Overclocking Guides

I’ve got back from my little ancient AMD Athlon 2800+,had done “some”overclocking on it with some guides from forumer and additional guides from the web.So here,I would like to share some technique used in overclocking an AMD systems.

Obviously,AMD system are harder to overclock as their locked multipliers for most model except for FX and BlackEdition Series.Unlike Intel,you can simply change the multiplier to simply increases the clock.

Initially, there are some favor which have to take note before you begin to overclock.

  • Turn off the cool and quiet,spread spectrum option in your motherboard[Inside Bios]
  • Lock your AGP and PCI-E clocks[66mhz for AGP while 100Mhz for PCI-E user]
  • OC is highly not encouraged in doing at BIOS,once the system hangs you”ll need to reset the jumper or even damaged your hardware[Corupt Bios,OS Corupt which I"ll explain later]Doing in windows would actually more safe and easy,if the system hangs one reboot would return all the things to default.
  • Your PSU Wattage must be a Continuous type and has a sufficient wattage for your system which not only met the entry eligible point.
  • Dont connect your Sata/IDE HDD at Primary point.It”ll corupt your windows.
  • Place your Hyper Transport Multiplier to X3,usually it set at X4 or even 5.[Note,BUS SPEEDxHTT Link Multiply =<1000Mhz for most AMD System]
  • If you’re hardcore overclockers,please use some aftermarket cooler as you”ll need some increases in the Vcores.This article is for casual overclockers which does not needing any increase in Vcores.

Next,you’re about to overclock your PC.Mostly for people who’re using Value Rams which cant get through with the bus speed.You have to use Ram Divider method.What is Ram Divider?

A ram divider is usually a setting found in your ram tweaking setting menu in your bios. dividers usually are 200(1:1), 166, 150, 133, 100 or 400, 333, 266, 200. etc..
The lower you go on the divider, the less ram speed is used. The whole point of a divider is if your memory can’t keep up with your fsb. say you have an a64 3200+ that does 2.5 ghz. you would normally do 250×10 ram 1:1 (ram 250 also) 1:1 HTT=ram speed 250=250. But in your case you have ram that won’t do 250mhz, so you need to use a divider.

For high performance ram user,they no need to worry as their rams can go through as high as their bus speed.But not too high also,somewhat they eventually have to use Ram Divider if willing to achieve a higher clocks.

Use this program to calculate the amount of FSB and the RAM frequencies which you have to lower to make your ram isn’t bog down.[Example your ram default speed is 200Mhz,meanwhile when increasing FSB,all things will goes up including HT Links,Ram clocks.By that,you have to lower the ram clocks in order to give space to the ram when the time u increasing the bus speed thus not exceeding 200Mhz]

This is the bad example which you can obviously see the DRAM frequencies alrdy exceeded 200Mhz.This is a BAD CLOCK!

By downclocking the memory frequencies will actually throughputting a result of <200Mhz clocks which is a GOOD CLOCK

If you found the sweet spot for your system,then now you can begin overclock your system by using software provided by mobo or 3rd party one like ClockGen.

After overclocked,dont forget to test out the stability of your system by using some stress program like Stress Prime 2004.

If error appears,you can troubleshoot by using CPU-Z.Check is there any clocks exceeded like what I’ve just mentioned.

Now we’re done overclocking the PC.

Additional Knowledge

  • For best stability,you can also increase the Vcore mere in mere,which a little bit.[0.1-0.3]Do not exceeds from this to prevent some DISASTER.Haha..
  • For some humble overclockers like us,you can actually force the HSF to run faster by using I8FANGUI.Google yourself,lazy to attach link also.=)

Lastly,once again remember not to plug ur HDD as Primary mode.It”ll corupt your windows,I’m the white mouse who sacrifice my pc to test out why for you.
